The Neighbourhood of Lewis Point in Charlottetown, PEI
Lewis Point Road is a wood-framed
former farmhouse on a large lot with mature trees. The house has been
extensively altered from its original form, with Maritime Vernacular
style such as a large central dormer on the south facade. It was
once part of a large farm with views of the North River and Ellen's
Creek, but the land around it has been developed into residential
housing in recent years. The exterior and parcel of the building are
included in the designation; the interior is not.
The
significance of 77 Lewis Point Road in terms of heritage is due to
its role as one of the first farms of the Charlottetown Royalty, as
well as its connection to the Lewis family, after whom the Lewis
Point neighborhood is named. It is not certain when the farmhouse was
built but a map from the early 1860’s shows that a house was owned
by Collins in this location. The Lewis family were owners of the
farmhouse back in 1889 when Meacham’s Illustrated Atlas of PEI was
published. The family owned over eighty full acres of land near North
River and Ellen’s Creek.
In
honor of the family who farmed there for so many years, the area has
been named Lewis Point. Harry Morris and the Bugden family were later
owners of the property. A historic photograph of 77 Lewis Point Road
exists, and it depicts a much larger home. The house has undergone
significant changes over the years, with a wing on the north side
being removed and a smaller section on the south side being added.
The verandah has been demolished and use to wrap around the façade.
The house was built in the everlasting style of Maritime Vernacular
Cottages.
