Spring Park

The Neighbourhood of Spring Park in Charlottetown, PEI

Located in Prince Edward Island, Spring Park is a lively town in Canada. This town got its name in 1925 from the renowned Spring Park School whose Southern boundary was then on the north side of Charlottetown and west of Parkdale and Sherwood villages. The community got its name from the Spring Park Road, which ran north from the city to manage the rural farming area which consisted of 4.9 hectors estates  in the independent municipality of the Queens Royalty.

After the 2nd World War, there was massive development and growth in population, thus leading to portions of Spring Park merging with the city. Another Spring Park School was founded on Kirkwood Drive in the mid-1950s; the building stood where the Charlottetown Police Station currently stands on Kirkwood Drive.

In the year 1954, the district of schools was converted and outlined between Kirkwood Drive, Eden Street, the North River East Bank,  the former railway line, Colonel Gray Drive, the Western Royalty southern border and the northern side of the University of PEI.

Spring Park Hall was located in the Spring Park Square District, alongside a Firestation residence for the Fire Department Volunteers. Spring Park Square District also contains the well known Spring Park School that is surrounded by Kirkwood Drive, Eden Street, Willow Road and University Avenue.

Located outside the city, Spring Park Square hosted a lot of important outdoor events including circuses from the 1920s to the 1950s.

On April 17, 1958, Spring Park was joined with the city of Charlottetown. The pressure to development in the Spring Park School area due to flooding of small families moving to new districts in the mid-1960s, prompted the school to relocate the building on Dunkirk Street in 1964.

The site is the first post-war district of Charlottetown and has small houses joined with larger bungalows and quiet roads paved with trees. It is likely to be Charlottetown's most popular and accessible neighbourhood as cafes, schools, churches and malls are within walking distance. This area increased in the late 1960s with the construction of Colonel Gray Secondary School in Simmons Estate in front of Spring Park Road and on the south of previous city boundary.

Units for housing such as Skyview and Holland Park were constructed in the later portion of the year 1960. More units were build in the year 1980 which included Maryfield and Westwood.
